McLane Walk Behind Reel Mowers are manufactured in the USA and designed for precision cutting, durability, and long-term reliability. These mowers are specifically engineered for premium turf varieties like Bermuda, St. Augustine, and Zoysia.
The Low-Cut Series are equipped with a grooved front roller - the preferred upgrade for managing high-end turf. It acts as a leveler, ensuring the reel stays at a consistent height even if the soil is uneven, and limits scalping. The grooves lift the grass between them so the reel can slice it cleanly, delivering a precise cut and professional stripes.
The Low-Cut Series grooved front roller has a few drawbacks. It is heavier and makes the mower harder to turn at the end of a row. Caster wheels will usually be a better fit if you have a lot of landscaping obstacles.
Unlike a standard frame, the Low-Cut Series features a lowered rear axle position. This allows for a precision cut as low as 3/8" while maintaining the ability to height-adjust up to 1-3/4" for seasonal transitions.
In the Low-Cut Series configuration, the 7-blade reel shines with low-to-medium-height grass. If you are keeping your lawn in the 3/8" to 1" range, the larger spacing between blades (in comparison to a 10-blade reel) is better-able to gather the low-to-medium height grass and feed it to the bedknife. With fewer blades and cuts per revolution, the reel is also less likely to "bog down" in overgrown grass. This lower clip rate (fewer cuts per inch) is less-suited to ultra-low lawn heights.
The Low-Cut Series has several widths and engine options available. Both the Briggs & Stratton ("B&S") and Honda engines are "industrial-grade" engines which cannot be found on equipment in big-box retailers. The B&S engines are more economical, and can be easier to work on, but are louder and vibrate more than the Honda engines. The Honda engines carry a premium price, but deliver better starting, lower noise, and longer life.
The Low-Cut Series is an ideal choice for: the cut precision and striping of a grooved roller, both with flat and semi-flat lawns, cutting low-to-medium heights (lowest possible cut is 3/8") (ideal cut height 3/8" to 1").
